Some people think that NLP is just an enhanced means of communicating with others. True, it uses the whole range of clues people give when communicating such as their body language, tone of voice as well as the actual words used to build a rapport and communicate effectively.
In fact, NLP is much, much more than that.
Everything we have ever seen and experienced is stored in our memories. Our own personal understanding of the world will influence how each one of us experiences and gives meaning to a particular situation or event. This understanding (in NLP terms "map") is our own interpretation of reality and we use it to make sense of the world and events.
One of the principles of NLP is the realisation that "the map is not the territory". By encouraging you to widen and enrich your own map it will give you more possibilities to deal with whatever opportunities and challenges arise in the future. Whilst you cannot change what has happened to you it may be possible to use different resources and reassess how you feel about things. You can start to take control of the effect others’ actions have on you. This opens up the possibility of controlling your own brain.
NLP offers the opportunity to develop tools to learn more about yourself. These tools can help you to make powerful changes in many areas of your life. These changes can be sustained, allowing you to permanently change unhelpful or limiting behaviours. By identifying your beliefs and values, you can understand who you really are. This can in turn allow you to understand others better and enable you to communicate with others much more effectively.
NLP can give you insights into how and why you do what you do. This puts you in the position of deciding whether to continue doing something, whether to improve the way you do it or change how you do it completely. The freedom to choose to change a harmful or restrictive behaviour is yours and, even better, with NLP you can do it quickly.
By developing more flexibility in your behaviours and thinking, you will have more opportunities to choose how to deal with the situations you are confronted with. You could even get to live the life you really want.
Collaborative can help you to:
- control your emotions and become more confident;
- eliminate phobias, fears and unproductive behaviours;
- develop better relationships by using language more precisely.
